Maintenance Guidelines
Maintenance of Leather Floor and Wall Tile
Leather tile is easy to care for.
To properly protect your new leather you should wax upon completion of the installation and before the floor is walked on. You can wax again anytime the tile looks dull or scuffed. Or apply wax just to keep the leather well conditioned. You can also wax just the traffic lanes if they start to look very scuffed. Some people like the scuffing as part of the look
they want from the leather. Our leather wall tiles should not be waxed.
Clean and condition the tile using Fineschmecker Pre-wax
Conditioner. Use a clean cotton cloth, saturate the cloth and apply the bee's wax liquid, allow to dry, and wipe it off. Quick and easy to apply and polish.
Then apply one to three coats of Fineschmecker Whipped Paste Wax. Apply with a clean cotton cloth, saturate the cloth and apply in a circular motion. (APPLY SPARINGLY. A LITTLE GOES A LONG WAY. DO NOT PUT "LUMPS" OF WAX ON THE LEATHER.) For large areas (over 300 or 400 square feet), you may want to get a small handheld buffer to polish the tile, the kind used to polish a car. We use one from Sears with a terry cloth bonnet (change the bonnet when it gets clogged with too much wax.
How to avoid "lumps" of wax: Fineschmecker is mild bee's wax and will not bother your hands (if you are concerned wear gloves) so you can put wax on a cloth and take your other hand and wipe the cloth so it's glistening but there are no white lumps of wax showing.
Heavily Trafficked Areas Use the Pre-wax Conditioner followed by one or two coats of Fineschmecker paste wax and then use two to three coats of Butcher's Bowling Alley Wax. Your local hardware store probably sells it. Apply sparingly and buff. This is a harder, tougher wax. DO NOT APPLY BUTCHER'S WAX WITHOUT THE PRE-WAX AND FINESCHMECKER PASTE FIRST OR IT MAY CAUSE A WHITE HAZE ON THE LEATHER, WHICH WILL BE DIFFICULT OR IMPOSSIBLE TO REMOVE.
Spills should be wiped up immediately. Use a damp (not wet) mop to mop tile, as and when needed. If you use a dry dust mop (like "Swiffer" or Pledge "grab-it") you will help to eliminate fine particles of dirt/grit.
This is "World Class" quality leather; with easy and regular care our real Steer Hide leather will mellow and improve over the years. Your tile will take the nicks, scratches and even spills of your daily life and incorporate them into a rich, unique *patina. Your leather floor will give you long lasting satisfaction, pleasure and pride as it becomes an heirloom. Few products can make that statement.
Dictionary: Patina- A natural material that grows more beautiful with age and
use.
IMPORTANT: Our Wall Tile should never be waxed.
IMPORTANT: Never use abrasive cleaners, soap, furniture polish, wax with a lot of Carnauba, varnish, solvent, or ammonia products.
IMPORTANT: Do not place rubber backed or non-ventilated rugs, rug padding or mats on top of the leather.
IMPORTANT: Exposing leather to direct sunlight (as with fabric and carpet) for prolonged periods of time may acerbate color changes.
